Teknotherm Compressor Control — Tanker
Complete renewal of the control system of a Teknotherm air conditioning compressor on a tanker after its HMI failed, using a Siemens S7-1200 PLC and SIMATIC KTP700 HMI; start/stop sequence, capacity control and HP/LP/oil pressure safeties rewritten in TIA Portal from the ship's electrical drawings.

About the project
We completely renewed the control system of a Teknotherm (Halden, Norway) air conditioning compressor on a tanker with a Siemens S7-1200 PLC and SIMATIC KTP700 HMI. The operator panel (HMI) of the existing system had failed; the control system was rebuilt including PLC and HMI, and the operating logic of the compressor was rewritten in TIA Portal based on the ship's electrical drawings.
A Siemens S7-1200 CPU 1214C, an SM 1223 digital input/relay output module and SM 1231 analogue input modules were mounted in the panel; the pressure and temperature transmitters were wired to the analogue inputs. A SIMATIC KTP700 Basic touch panel added to the panel door communicates with the PLC over PROFINET; the existing pushbuttons, lamps and emergency stop were kept.
The HMI main screen shows the high pressure (HP), low pressure (LP) and oil pressure, the compressor temperatures and the capacity (load) position live, together with the status of the water condenser and liquid line 1 and 2 solenoid valves. HP/LP and oil pressure safety cut-outs, the start/stop sequence and the capacity steps are handled by the PLC; alarms are logged in the HMI alarm list.
The system was commissioned on board and the air conditioning compressor was tested under load.
