Incinerator Control — Dry Cargo Vessel
Replacement of a Mitsubishi FX2N incinerator PLC whose program had been lost on a dry cargo vessel with a Siemens S7-1200 and SIMATIC HMI; the operating sequence and the combustion air and fuel PID control were rewritten in TIA Portal.

About the project
We renewed the control system of the waste incinerator on a dry cargo vessel. The program of the existing Mitsubishi FX2N PLC had been lost and the incinerator could not be operated. The PLC and its expansion modules were removed; a Siemens S7-1200 CPU 1212C with I/O modules and an interface relay group were mounted in their place, and the old operator panel on the door was replaced with a SIMATIC HMI. The power supply, contactors, motor protection switches and the fan frequency converter in the panel were kept.
The program was rewritten in TIA Portal: the operating sequence, burner control and safety interlocks run in the PLC, while the combustion air and fuel are controlled by PID loops according to the combustion chamber temperature. The PID parameters were optimised on board with the TIA Portal tuning tool while the incinerator was running. Operating status, temperatures and alarms are shown on the HMI.
The system was commissioned on board and verified with burning tests.
