Standby Pump Control — Container Vessel

Replacement of the failed Siemens S7-200 PLCs controlling the standby function of the main engine S.W., H.T./L.T. cooling and L.O. pumps in the main switchboard of a container vessel with S7-1200; automatic standby start and sequential restart logic rewritten in TIA Portal.

Standby Pump Control — Container Vessel

About the project

We renewed the standby control units of the main engine auxiliary pump group starters in the main switchboard (MSB) of a container vessel with Siemens S7-1200. The existing Siemens S7-200 PLC had failed and its program was lost, leaving the pumps without their automatic standby function. Two separate control units were installed for the No.1 and No.2 groups of the sea water cooling (S.W.), high and low temperature fresh water cooling (H.T./L.T.) and main engine lube oil (L.O.) pumps.

The starter fronts, ammeters, POWER/TRIP/RUNNING/STANDBY lamps and MANU/AUTO mode switches were kept. Siemens S7-1200 CPUs and I/O modules were mounted on DIN rails in the standby control compartments of the group panels; the connection to the pump starters is made through interface relays, and surge protection was added to the supply line.

The program was rewritten in TIA Portal. When the running pump of a pair in AUTO mode trips or the line pressure drops, the standby pump starts automatically; after a blackout, the pumps are restarted in sequence once power returns (sequential restart). The STANDBY lamp shows which pump is waiting as standby.

Commissioning and standby changeover tests were carried out on board with the pumps in operation.
