M/E Safety System — RO-RO Vessel

Main engine safety system for a twin-engine RO-RO vessel, built on Siemens S7-1200 PLCs and WinCC SCADA: RPM, pressure and temperature monitoring with alarm set points adjustable in the SCADA.

M/E Safety System — RO-RO Vessel

About the project

We rebuilt the main engine safety system (M/E Safety System) of a twin-engine RO-RO vessel on Siemens hardware. The PLC program was developed in TIA Portal and the operator interface in the engine control room was built with Siemens WinCC SCADA.

The RPM and pitch angle of both main engines are shown on analogue gauges on the SCADA screen. Pressures and temperatures of the lube oil, fresh water, booster, scavenge, gearbox and sea water lines are displayed live on separate bar indicators for each engine.

All alarm set points and safety limits are defined parametrically inside the SCADA, and authorised crew can change them on screen. Alarms are logged to the alarm list with date, time and source. M/E stop, emergency stop, alarm silence and alarm reset commands are given from the same screen.

The automation cabinet uses two Siemens S7-1200 CPUs with analogue and digital I/O modules; the CPUs and the SCADA station communicate over PROFINET through a Siemens SCALANCE industrial switch.
